When Is A Leader Not A Leader?

"Are you a leader at heart?"

Asking someone who is stepping into such a role seems logical, but it seems an odd question to ask someone running their own company or who has been in a high position for many years.

But, this is the question I frequently ask clients.

The reason I ask this question is that I commonly find that many experienced business people find themselves in a leadership position, but are not 'at heart' leaders.

Many contact me because they feel uncomfortable in this position, but don't know why.

They get to the position of Leader because of their skills as Workers or Managers.

I spoke to one struggling company, where none of the partners identified themselves as 'natural' leaders.

In effect, the company was leaderless, but until I asked the question, they had no idea why they were struggling, because all were 'working' as hard as they could.

And that was the problem, they were defaulting to where they naturally felt the most comfortable and where they had created tangible results in the past.

It can be very tough to admit you are struggling.

This is why I always ask this question in private.

Do you need to become a Natural Leader?

Ask me about the Alpha Programme.
